Anonymous question

After conflict, the other person stops speaking for hours or days. They say they need space, but it feels like punishment. What is the difference between space and silent treatment?

IIR
IIR response

Healthy space has a return plan. Silent treatment removes connection to punish, control or avoid accountability. The difference is clarity and care.

A healthy pause sounds like: ‘I am overwhelmed. I need one hour, and then I will come back.’ Silent treatment leaves the other person anxious and guessing.

You can respect someone’s need for space while still asking for basic relational responsibility.

Practical next steps

Agree on pause rules: how long, when to return, what topic to discuss and what behaviour is not acceptable during the pause.
