Anonymous question

We fight about spending, saving, family support or financial priorities. One person feels controlled and the other feels irresponsible behaviour is being ignored. How do we discuss money better?

IIR
IIR response

Money fights are often value fights. One person may value security; the other may value freedom, generosity, status, family duty or enjoyment. Begin by naming the value, not attacking the behaviour.

A practical money conversation needs three parts: facts, feelings and rules. Facts: income, expenses, commitments and debt. Feelings: what money represents to each person. Rules: what requires joint agreement, what is individual spending, and what is planned family support.

Avoid vague accusations like ‘you always waste money.’ Replace them with clear agreements.

Practical next steps

Hold a monthly 45-minute money meeting. Decide personal spending limits, shared savings targets, debt priorities and family-support boundaries.
