Anonymous question

My teenager gives one-word answers, spends time on the phone and gets irritated when I ask questions. I feel I am losing connection. What should I do?

IIR
IIR response

Teenagers need autonomy and connection at the same time. Too much interrogation can feel controlling; too little involvement can feel like disinterest.

Shift from questioning to joining. Instead of beginning with ‘Why are you always on the phone?’ try ‘Show me something you found funny today’ or ‘Do you want advice or do you just want me to listen?’

Connection often opens before correction. Once the teenager feels less judged, boundaries become easier to discuss.

Practical next steps

Create one no-lecture connection ritual: a walk, snack, drive, shared show or 10-minute night check-in. Keep advice limited unless asked.
