Anonymous question

My manager’s feedback feels personal or discouraging. I want to improve, but I become anxious before every conversation. How do I handle this professionally?

IIR response

Harsh feedback can reduce confidence and make learning harder. At work, try to convert the conversation from judgement to observable expectations.

You can say: ‘I want to improve. Could we identify the two behaviours or outputs you want me to change first?’ This keeps the conversation specific.

After the meeting, send a short summary of agreed actions. This creates clarity and reduces ambiguity.

Practical next steps

Ask for specific examples, expected standard and timeline. Document the next steps politely. If feedback becomes bullying or discriminatory, use appropriate HR or reporting channels.
